Phonics

The Curriculum at Sacred Heart

We are always delighted to talk to parents/carers and prospective parents/carers about our school curriculum and they can find out more information in the following ways:
• from our prospectus
• at the pre-school transition meetings
• through the policies on our school website
• at workshops for specific curriculum areas where new developments are explained
• by making one-to-one enquiries which will be responded to by the head, subject leader or class teacher

Curriculum overviews for each year group can be found on the school website on the appropriate class page.

Phonics and Reading schemes

At Sacred Heart there is a rigorous programme of phonics teaching across the school. In KS1 and EYFS daily teaching takes place in focussed groups. In KS2 identified children participate in phonics and reading groups.
We use the following materials: Letters and Sounds, Jolly Phonics and Phonics Play as well as using a range of IWB programs.
For reading we have a wide range of books which have been banded into stages and the key schemes are:
Dandelion phonic readers, the Oxford Reading Tree, Heinemann Storyworlds, Ginn 360 and Rigby Star.

All classes have reading areas and additionally children are encouraged to borrow books from the school library on a weekly basis.
